The Absolutely Critical Step 2: Do It! [Part 3] – A step-by-step guide to acting on the knowledge that you’ve invested time and money to acquire
IN the last instalment in this series, I covered three of the 12 stumbling blocks that you’ve to evade in order to put into practice the knowledge you invested your time and money to acquire. The three stumbling blocks are: Instant gratification; Lack of patience and Covetousness.
The fourth one on the list is Low self esteem.
A dictionary describes self esteem as “a realistic respect for or a favourable impression of oneself; self-respect or an inordinately or exaggeratedly favourable impression of oneself.
You can easily deduce from that definition what low self esteem means. While having a high self esteem is good, when it’s low it’s bad. Self esteem is the trust you have in your own decisions and how much you value yourself. When it is low, you begin to need to rely on another person for the direction to go or what answer to give.
With regards to this subject, if you have low self esteem, you’ll find it difficult to trust in your own ability to reproduce the result that you knew was possible from the knowledge you’ve just acquired.
Procrastination
This is the well-recognized enemy of success. Because it has been exposed for what it is, almost anyone who has read or learnt anything about how to succeed has been warned to beware of this enemy.
Procrastination is so dangerous that it alone can scuttle your dream. It is the innocuous habit that keeps tempting you to put things off till another day. Don’t worry, Procrastination says to you with a soothing voice, you can always do that tomorrow. Relax a bit. You still have the whole of tomorrow.
If you listen to that voice, you’re a goner. You’ve just kissed your dream goodbye.
Lack of confidence
This is not to be confused with Low Self Esteem. To have confidence is to be self assured, usually based on a conviction that things will turn out right and based on that conviction, you begin to act on your plans.
There are two types of confidence. One type is the one you have in the Word of GOD. This confidence is expressed this way: Because the Word of GOD said so, then it is so. And on that basis, you put you trust in GOD believing that no matter what happens, the outcome of what you want to do will be exactly as the Word of GOD tells you it will be.
The second type of confidence is the one you have in your ability to make things happen. This second type of confidence can prove to be faulty if it’s not based on the first type.
To enjoy success in all your endeavours, you must have both types of confidence. If you lack either or both of them, you will be stranded in your life’s pursuits.
Misplaced Priority
Stephen Covey, in his best selling book, 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, writes about doing first things first. In fact, Stephen Covey believes so much in this principle that he made it the title of his sequel to the Seven Habits. And there is a lot of sense in doing that. But most people rarely observe this rule. Not doing first things first create a problem that is usually avoidable.
For example, if you are working on a project that is sure to ease your cash flow problem when you finish it but instead you decide to go on a sponsored trip that will not change your financial position because it is free, you’ve misplaced your priority.
Yes, you may argue that you may never have another opportunity to go on such trip again. But which is more important to you? Solving your cash flow problem or going on a sponsored vacation that would mean compounding your cash flow problem when you return?
Money Pressure
Currently, this is one of the most virulent destiny derailers plaguing so many young men and women across the entire nation. First, they get a breakthrough idea, an idea that is certain to give them financial freedom if they worked had at it and plan their finances very well.
But before you know it, money pressure soon rare its ugly head and, within a twinkle of the eyes, you will find another victim of it squirming in embarrassing financial mess.
What is money pressure? I define it as a situation where you need money to do something fast, whether critical or not, but you don’t have it. Instead of postponing that need, you devise a means of getting it by either making promises you hope you can fulfil or one you know you cannot fulfil to people who until that moment trust you.
When the time comes to fulfil your promise and you cannot meet your obligation, then you’ve succumbed to that disease I call money pressure. All of a sudden, you’ve become a fraudster.
The evil day you postponed by getting your financial need met will come back to haunt you. Whereas just saying, I cannot meet this need now and face the consequences, no matter how unpalatable, you now find yourself losing respect and reputation. Money pressure is that poisonous!
Inability to handle set backs
One fact of life that no one can escape is that some things will surely go wrong, no matter how well you prepare or plan ahead. Knowing that as a truth is the key to handling it effectively.
But some people are never able to handle it. They dwell for a long time on why they should have a set back; why did it happen at all. Instead of accepting what has happened as a fait accompli and looking for a way to refocus their compass in the right direction, they spend so much time blaming themselves for what has happened. In the process, they lose vital ground and get discouraged.
You need to remind yourself constantly that having a set-back is not the final outcome possible from what you are doing. If it happens, take it in your stride, look for a most creative way to redress it, and move on with your project.
Lack of focus
What is a lack of focus? An illustration of this negative habit will make it abundantly clear to you. Let’s say you have just started a recruitment agency supplying staff to small businesses in your locality.
While the business is still building up, you get another idea to start fish farming and you dive into it. And while you’re at it, something else crops up and you decided to take it on.
As a result, you find yourself being pulled in three different directions. That is what is called lack of focus.
Why is it counter-productive? Because you cannot do all the three things efficiently at the same time. It is not just that they are not complementary ideas but most importantly it is because the only things you do well are the things you give your full concentration to. One major thing at a time. The moment it’s more than one, you are already losing focus. And it will prove disastrous.
So what about those who manage different projects at the same time? The short answer is that they have competent managers who oversee their different projects for them while they concentrate on managing the managers without distractions.
Lack of self discipline
To be disciplined is to be well-behaved; to control one’s conduct in line with a set of rules. When you are unable to observe certain rules, you are said to lack discipline.
To be self disciplined therefore means you keep within laid down rules all by your own without being forced to comply with them. Now, anyone who cannot obey instructions unless they are compelled to do so lacks self-discipline.
For example, if it requires you to set aside one hour a day to implement an idea from a seminar you’ve just attended and either skip days in a row without doing it or spend less than 15 minutes on it instead of an hour, you definitely lack self discipline.
Your chances of accomplishing that task or finishing that project will be next to zero.
Inability to handle frustration
Frustration sets in when you’ve tried over and over to get something done and you’re not making headway. The natural tendency is to give it up, to quit. If you do, it’s a big mistake.
Why? Because quitters never win and winners never quit.
Think of Thomas Edison. The great inventor was
Thomas Edison’s attitude was, there must be a way and I’m going to find it no matter what it takes. That’s the winning attitude. That is what you develop. Without it, failure will stare you on the face.
Here is the 13th stumbling block to your desire to do what you’ve invested so much time and money to learn which I didn’t include at the beginning: the ones you have discovered by yourself which I didn’t know about and all other ones like them.
The ones I covered have given you an idea of what the road blocks look like.
You must recognize these obstacles to success and avoid them like plague. They are enemies to your success. Your goal is to side-track them at all times.
Don’t worry if you encounter them in your quest to become successful. We all do. Just make sure that they don’t over-power you.
In the next installment, I’ll hold you by the hand and show you, step-by-step, exactly how you should proceed to get going doing what is necessary to implement what you have learnt
